Bio
Ofnus - Fearful, nervous, afraid.
From the first scrapings of pick against wound string, Ofnus’s direction became apparent. To fuse the dynamic, often bleak and sometimes saw-toothed harshness of atmospheric black metal, with the broad and sweeping melodies of modern-classic film score, with a vision to take you on a journey of unfathomable introspection. Through vast and evocative soundscapes that veer between sullen and monumental, exploring themes of grief, inexplicable fears and maladies, Ofnus seek to bring you to your Nadir and back to catharsis.
Formed in late 2021 with a line-up curated with members past and present of established South Wales acts such as Agrona, Democratus, Blind Divide & Black Pyre; Ofnus acted swiftly to capitalise on the potential trajectory of the band, quickly recording and releasing the debut full length opus “Time Held Me Grey and Dying” through the acclaimed international black metal label Naturmacht Productions.
Since then, from their debut performance in January 2023 at the sold-out Reaper “Jorvik” event that announced the misery to the live circuit, the band has toured across the UK, with notable supporting slots for other note-worthy peers such as Arkona, Wayfarer, Sunken, The Infernal Sea & Abduction, and markedly a particularly memorable Sunday morning wake-up call for the Bloodstock ‘23 crowd.
Unwilling to settle, and keen to develop the formula that has garnered a growing reputation for emotionally provocative and intense live performances, Ofnus released their sophomore record “Valediction” in 2025 supported by the BBC Horizons Gorwelion initiative, further exploring the oft-maligned facets of the human psyche and expanding the horizons of the band’s sound to unfamiliar territories, unabated by genre tropes and soaked in epic symphonic scoring.
Notable sold-out dates with Scottish luminaries Saor, a much requested album set at Beermageddon and a further appearance on the Sophie Lancaster Stage at the hallowed grounds of Catton Hall at Bloodstock followed suit. With a change at the helm and new material prepared for recording, 2026 becomes the year of new horizons for Ofnus. A new vocalist, the promise of further material and renewed vigour to deliver the simultaneously most majestic and maudlin of music to all who dare embrace their looming spectres.
Ofnus is: Alyn, Ethan, James, Richard, Brendan. Our goal is to reunite you with your melancholy.
We are but dreaming men…
Brendan
Vocals
The most recent addition to the band, Brendan brings a diverse palette of vocal stylings and nuances to Ofnus. Currently also of Blackened Post Metal band OldBlood, we are excited to showcase Brendan's abilities across the country and beyond starting in 2026.
Alyn
Rhythm Guitars
Co-founder of Ofnus with Ethan, Alyn is the primary composer of the band. Originally a classically trained vocalist/orchestral performer, and formerly of Welsh black metal horde Agrona and other outputs, Alyn weaves multiple genre influences and tropes into Ofnus' identity.
Alyn uses Neural DSP modellers, Hagstrom & LTD guitars, D'addario Strings & Line 6 Wireless
James
Lead Guitars
Bringing dissonance and feeling in equal measure to the melodies that are sculpted into Ofnus's core, James was an early recruit into the project, and despite not having significant genre knowledge beforehand, has committed himself entirely to the task of telling mournful tales through his stringwork. Formerly of Cardiff based groove-metal band Blind Divide.
James uses Neural DSP modelling, Jackson guitars & D'addario strings
Richard
Bass
It's not an unusual case for one of the best guitarists of the band to not actually be playing the guitar - in this instance, it's the bassist. Previously performing with Democratus and Opia, Richard brings a unique perspective to the handling of the lower frequencies, ensuring there is adequate heft and complexity to the misery Ofnus perform.
Rich uses Line6 modelling, Ibanez Basses & D'addario Strings
Ethan
Drums
Former drummer for Cardiff based black metal band, Black Pyre and also performing live with Oneiros, Ethan formed Ofnus with Alyn in late 2021. His blast beat driven and stylistically deft drumming carves through the band’s bleak soundscape, laying the foundations for the epic and maudlin sonic visions.
Ethan uses Meinl cymbals & Czarcie Koptyto Pedals
History
William
Vocalist 2022-2025
Currently still producing solo material of the now-studio project Black Pyre, William played a significant part in creating the sound of Ofnus for the first two records.
Lending not only his vocal and lyrical talents to the fore but also his production expertise, his contributions to our achievements so far cannot be understated - and we will remain grateful for his work with us and the memories made along the way.
